Located just south of Colorado Springs, Cave of the Winds is a great adventuring spot for the whole family.
More than just a cave there is an entire mountainside of fun to get into.
Another beautiful place we enjoyed in Colorado Springs is Garden of the Gods.
Located in Denver is the Wings Over the Rockies aviation museum.
Getting To Cave of the Winds
Cave of the Winds address: 100 Cave of the Winds Rd, Manitou Springs, CO 80829
They are located off Highway 24 just west of Colorado Springs.
The ride up to Cave of the Winds is a very winding road to the parking lot. The parking lot is a large flat dirt lot. They had plenty of parking on the day we arrived and parking is free. Once you arrive to the parking lot Cave of the Winds appears to be broken up into two parts. The day we went (early May 2022) the top section was not open. It appears to be seasonal so check their website for details. The lower section has more than enough fun for an entire day.
Purchasing Cave of the Winds Tour Tickets
We purchased our cave tickets inside the gift shop. Your cave tickets will have a timed entrance. I was glad we did that part first as it was a fairly busy day and our timed entry into the cave was more than an hour wait. Please check their website for latest on ticket prices. For Discovery cave tour their prices are $26.00 for adult, $17.00 for kids aged 4-12, and free for children under 3. They also have a haunted lantern tour that sounds cool $34.00 per adult and $24.00 for kids 8-12. (These prices are as of August, 2022.) You can purchase tickets and make your reservations online.
Other Fun Activities
There was plenty to keep the kids happy while we waited. Some of the free spots to play were my kids favorites. They went up the tower and slid down so many times I was sure they would eventually grow tired of it. But they certainly did not. They also had a great time going through the cave simulator. It is built for smaller kids.
There were a few extra things that you can add on to the cave tour for a fee.
Gold and gem panning
Bat-a-pult
the Ropes course
and the sling shot
Cave of the Winds Cave Tour
I was very impressed with the cave tour. It was not my first cave, but I have always thought they were cool. This cave seemed much longer than tours I have been on in the past. And the thing I thought was so cool was that while we were underground we were still at an altitude of 7,000 feet Making Cave of the Winds one of the highest altitude caves in the US.
The cave is not for all mobilities. It is not entirely wheelchair accessible, sadly. (( If you know of one please message me as I would love to put that info here.)) The cave does have some fairly steep stairs that are more like a ladder. The guide was so kind in letting everyone know before entering the cave that if they felt uncomfortable with any part he could help them get out of the cave safely. You also won’t be able to use strollers. If you are in a chair, please check with Cave of the Winds to see if parts of it are accessible. Its worth a call. (719)685-5444.
We obviously had no cell phone reception in the cave, but my Verizon phone service was in and out the entire time we were visiting. So be prepared for that.
When you go you can plan to spend the entire day. We were able to grab a snack from the Canyon Rim Grill and enjoy the incredible views from their dining room. It was a pricey snack, but it beat the heck out of hiking back to the car for a snack or having to leave before we were ready to.
Over all we loved Cave of the Winds. Next time we are back in the area I have a feeling we will go again. We explored this area while we were traveling in our RV for a few months. Check out why we decided to live in our travel trailer for months at a time.
