In 2022, my family took a trip to Colorado Springs, CO. We were traveling in our camper, so we booked a week’s stay at the Lone Duck Campground. We loved it, and think it is an amazing place for families.

Lone Duck has so many great things about it! Some of the things we love will be things others don’t care for. If you don’t like kids… this ain’t the place. If you are looking to be in nature and silence… this isn’t it. If you are looking to be near everything and have some fun stuff for the kids… this is it.

The playground was a hit in our family!

The Location

The Location of Lone Duck is just outside everything you could want to do in the Colorado Springs area.

A Journey Through Wings Over the Rockies, Denver, Colorado

Lone Duck Campground is at the base of Pikes Peak. The campground is at an elevation of 7,600 feet, it was still higher than we are used to (we live at less than 1000). I do feel like it might have helped us when we began our journey to the top of Pikes Peak at more than 14K ft!

The campground is right next to a busy road. Perfect for the people in campers and just looking to be close to fun things to do.

We did have a beautiful view of the mountains, but the campground is not where you will be experiencing nature. They made a lot of use of the entire area they had. It is a bit cramped. Our site was wicked tight to get into. We were arriving on a Saturday afternoon, so many of the weekenders were already there and set up for a long weekend of fun. Everyone around us was kind and my kids loved meeting other kids just minutes after we arrived.

Staying at Lone Duck Campground

There are a few ways to stay at Lone Duck. You can bring your tent, your camper, or rent a cabin.

Cabins

There are seven cabins on the property. Each cabin has a small fridge, microwave, a fire pit, and a picnic table. You will need to bring your own bedding. There are no bathrooms in the cabins, but the main building has bathrooms and showers.

Glamping

When we were there we saw some Airstreams that appeared to be set up for some glamping. They don’t list them on the website, so I am not sure if the Airstreams are still available. They do have photos of a beautiful wagon that is available.

RV Site

We were lucky enough to get one of only ten full hook-up sites. The site we were in was long enough for our trailer, but it was a tight fit. If your camper is longer than 30 feet, you may be in for a tight squeeze.

They have ten full-hook-up sites (30 AMP), 30 water-electric sites (30 AMP), and three water-electric pull-through (50 AMP) sites.

Tent Camping

There are 22 tent sites with water and electricity.

Lone Duck Campground Amenities

As I have already said one of the best parts of the campground is its location. They are at the base of Pikes Peak, andclose to Colorado Springs.

All of the sites have their own fire pits and picnic tables. The main office building has a store that sells many things needed while camping. Smores kits, t-shirts, and bags of ice are just a few of the things.

Also located in the main building is a gathering area, and I did see some campers coming here to use their microwave and have their lunch. This is also where the 24-hour shower/bathrooms are. We used the bathrooms, and they were perfectly fine.

My kids LOVED the game room. The arcade has Pac-Man, Galaga, and Tron. They would have spent every quarter I had if I hadn’t needed them for the laundry room.

The laundry room is also in the main building. It is a 24-hour room. There are several washing machines available, so we started all the loads at once.

The laundry room was very dark, but cleans laundry just fine!

There is free wi-fi. But we didn’t use it, so I can’t tell you much about it. I don’t remember much about the cell phone service, so it was at least good enough to get by.

There is a pretty lake at the center of the camp, and it stays stocked with trout that you can go and catch. You pay per fishyou catch.

The pool was heated and was mostly warm. We were here just before and during a May snowstorm. It was wild swimming outside one day and playing with snowballs the next!

My kids (and every other kid there) LOVED the playground!  I did see on their Facebook page they were re-doing the playground.

We saw lots of very healthy deer coming through the campground.

If you are looking for a campground without kids, this one is not the one. This is a kid-friendly campground. The pool, the game room, and the playground were all a lot of fun for my kids.

The Lone Duck Campground is at

8855 Highway 24

Cascade, CO 80809

We were able to make our Lone Duck Campground reservations online here.

Their season is early May to late September. We were there in late May and still got 10 inches of snow. (We did go into Denver and stay at this hotel.) We came back to a massive tree limb down in the neighboring site. They had plowed enough of the campground, so we pulled our camper out (with four-wheel drive).

We enjoyed our stay at Lone Duck Campground. If you are a family, it is a great place to stay to get around to the amazing sites here. It was exactly what we were looking for, and we were very pleased.

Nestled at the base of Pikes Peak, the Lone Duck Campground is a great place to stay to be near it all. Just down the road from Pikes Peak, and not far from everything Colorado Springs has to offer. This family friendly campground is a great place to stay for your adventures.
