Vivid Sydney
When we began planning our Sydney vacation we found out about the beautiful event about to rain down on an already beautiful Australian icon.
Unfortunately our dates off didn’t quite match up with the dates for Vivid, but as you can see in our video below we did see a lot and were wowed by everything we saw!
But while it wasn’t the official start date just yet there were workers everywhere gearing up for the huge event. We were able to see the Harbour Bridge lit up as well as the other buildings in town. Our first glimpse of the Sydney Opera House was magical. The city was beautiful. This is Skylark and is lit up from 6-11 PM. The lit up Harbour bridge, Circular Quay, and Sydney Harbour is the first thing you will see and is worth the trip in itself. The next day we went back and were able to check out the Royal Gardens and see some hint as to what Vivid is going to be all about. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed that we won’t get to see it all.
As we came over to Sydney for the first time on the Ferry from Manly Wharf there was a sign lit up that we couldn’t quite read. The next day as we walked around the Royal Gardens we were able to see “How Many Light Bulbs Does it take to Change a person?” What a beautiful sign that while may bring a chuckle to some, brings deep pondering for many. Designed by artist Richard Neville, this display of 2,570 light bulbs really makes you think! How many light bulbs does it take to change a person?
The Bloom looked beautiful even unlit in the daytime and I am sure it is even more spectacleular at night. Located in the Royal Botanic Garden, you don’t want to miss this one.
We could see the Nautilus Forest from the ferry ride over. Adding to the magical view of the Opera house you won’t miss this one and it is incredible from far away, so I can imagine it is even better up close!
We saw Synergy during our walk through downtown during the day. It was still a work in progress as we passed, but is sure to be quite an impressive display. It is located just off Loftus Street.
Our family LOVES butterflies! Seeing Chrysalis during the day and not yet lit up was really cool. I am sure we would love this one lit at night. It is also located just off Loftus Street. Don’t miss this one!! and if you get by there, please send me a picture!!
Come Fly With Me was especially touching to a family of aviators. The paper airplanes get smaller in size and look as though it is a plane taking off. Located next to the Harbor you won’t miss it if you are leaving the ferry heading to the Opera House!
Aqueous is located in the Royal Gardens as well. An interactive display you are encouraged to run, jump, and play to get the lights really playing along with you. I am sure my kids would have loved to stay here the entire night and just enjoy this one art piece. The view from here was incredible. You can see the city in the background, the Government House (the home of the Governor of New South Wales which looks like a castle), and many other Vivid displays.
There are so many more displays located in and all around Sydney. Most of the displays are free and will be going nightly from now until June 16 (6-11PM)!
Make sure you download the Vivid Sydney app to get a map and description of some of the displays you will find. I did see that there are displays that aren’t on the app, so you will see even more lights than the app will tell you about!
If you have ever thought of a visit to Sydney, I highly recommend you attend during Vivid. This is our family video complete with our first glimpse of the Opera House!
