Who says schoolhouses can’t turn into vacation homes!!!
One of my hobbies is looking on VRBO for vacation homes. I enjoyed doing a post on airplanes that are now VRBOs.
The most popular post on my blog is a quick read to give you an overview of staying at a VRBO.
I love VRBOs that have some history behind them! Finding a place to stay that has a story adds to the experience. And I truly believe that a good VRBO is an experience in itself!
When I think of an old school house, I can’t help thinking of the Laura Ingalls “Little House on the Prarie” series. I think of the one-room church/school building. With the giant bell tower to ring when church or school is starting. Complete with an outhouse. But trust me, I didn’t throw any rentals out that require the use of an outhouse. Because that doesn’texactly sound like a vacation situation. I didn’t find an old-school house rental in Walnut Grove… but I have some beauties to share with you.
Ohio 1895 Schoolhouse
This first home was from around 1895, which aligns with the time Laura Ingalls would have been making her trek into town to school. This one-bedroom, one-bathroom vacation home is a beautiful step back in history. It has a small kitchen area with a stove, sink, and coffee station. Seasonally you can enjoy a relaxing evening around the fire pit. The home is 15 minutes from the Ohio State Reformatory, which was the prison used in Shawshank.
Rural Vermont VRBO Schoolhouse
The next home is in rural Vermont. This home might be perfect for leaf peeping. It is a 19th-century schoolhouse and still has original blackboards and maps. This rental is a beautiful step back into history while still being able to enjoy some wifi. (Let’s not completely go back to the pioneer days!) This one bedroom, one bath sleeps 4. The reviews on this vacation rental are 10/10! It sounds like a perfect fall destination.
Ribbon Ridge Schoolhouse
Located in Arkansas’s Ozarks (NW Arkansas is one of the most beautiful places I have seen in our country), this 1891 schoolhouse has been fully restored. This old schoolhouse has a kitchen, washer/dryer, and air conditioning; certainly, many upgrades since its days of teaching kids. This one bedroom and one bathroom rental has amazing 9.8/10 stars on the reviews. Check out this incredible part of Arkansas in style!
Old Schoolhouse Turned Luxury
The next property doesn’t even resemble an old schoolhouse anymore, but it clocks high on the amenities list. With 4 bedrooms and 3+ bathrooms, it can sleep 16 guests! Yes, SIXTEEN! This property doesn’t tell about their home’s history, but it was probably to make room to tell you about all the perks they have here. The property has a pool and a hot tub… so you can imagine what else they offer. Reviews on this home 10/10!!
VRBO Schoolhouse For All History Buffs
The exterior is BEAUTIFUL! and the decor inside looks like so much of it may have come from the old schoolhouse. This rental home was built in 1872!! I homeschool my kids and we studied American History this year. We spent more time on the Civil War than we have in the past. Knowing the state of the world at that time, it’s wild to imagine a schoolhouse being built at the beginning of the war. At a time when so many are leaving for the war. It really is a beautiful part of history and is close to even more important parts of our country’s history.
The home is located close to Gettysburg and the Appalachian Trail. It is a vacation rental we would love. It is a one bedroom one bath and sleeps 6. With some fantastic reviews of 10/10!
I love doing these posts on VRBOs, so make sure you subscribe to see more of them.
Super fun post! There’s a schoolhouse-turned-vacation rental in South Haven, MI that I have been eyeing for a couple years now. I think it would be so neat to stay there.
I had to go look it up! Is it the Indiana School that you are talking about? That one looks epic. I’m going to have to edit this post and include this one. Thanks for telling me about it!
