((Update: As of February, 2024 I have been told the park is undergoing some serious renovations. I am not sure when the campground will re-open, but I am so excited to hear they will be improving it. But I was also assured that they park understands the importance of keeping the beautiful history of the CCC buildings. ))
Our family recently made a trip to Memphis, TN where my husband works. On our way home, towing our newly purchased travel trailer we decided to find a camping spot just outside Memphis. We are hoping to visit some Alabama State Parks and then explore more of the US.
We found the Wall Doxey State Park in Mississippi on our Park Advisor app. The previous reviews and the convenient location just off I-22 made it the perfect spot for our first night in our camper. Our stay at Wall Doxey was just one night. We set up just before dark and broke camp just after day light the next morning. And since it was our first day/night in our new camper… we were too excited to get out and explore the park like we normally would.
We have also stayed at Tishomingo State Park, MS.
Wall Doxey State Park Campground
It was our first time ever camping in a camper. Our first time driving a camper. Our first time setting one up… lots of firsts here. We were fortunate that we found a park that was so easy to get into, easy to park in, and had level sites so it was easy to set up…. I am so thankful this was where we set up for the first time.
The sites were perfectly angled for backing a trailer into (something we are finding isn’t how all campgrounds are laid out), the roads were wide enough, the limbs were all cleared, the site was wide enough for our slide to come out easily. We had read on the reviews and did see for ourselves that the tree roots have started to push up on the road. I didn’t find it to be a problem and seem more like it was nature’s speed bumps… and as a mom that camps with kids… I really like the idea of having speed bumps around the campground.
There are 60 campsites and they offer water and electric hook-ups.
There is a dump station as you exit the campground. The trash can is also located at the dump station.
There is a bath house. It is not the most updated, but it was clean. The bath house was also warm on the chilly day that we were there. (If you have ever had to shower on a cold morning you will know how important this is.)
The max camper Length is 40 Feet, and has concrete pads.
The sites have a picnic table, grill, and fire ring.
The state park is old and is showing it’s age. If you are looking for a place to go camping and enjoy the outdoors, you are in luck. If you are looking for a RV resort experience this is not the place you want to visit. There was some highway noise, but there are lots of trees and beautiful birds singing. The sites have plenty of room between them, so if you do go when the park is full, you will still have some privacy.
It was only $22 a night. We arrived and no one was at the gate, so we had to pay at the honor box. (So make sure you have cash before you come.) There was some confusion on which sites were for reservations, and which ones are first come first serve. There was conflicting information on some of the papers we found. So we had to pick one and hope for the best. We were camping mid-week and there was almost no one else there, so that made it easy.
Wall Doxey State Park Amenities
The Wall Doxey State Park has a 60 acre spring-fed lake with a boat ramp. The lake looks beautiful! There are picnic tables, a picnic pavilion, a playground. There is a disc golf course. It looks like an amazing place to spend time outdoors with family.
I did read that there are cabins in this park. I didn’t find a good review on the cabins at all. I did not see them and hesitate to say bad things about them as they may have been updated recently. I just urge you to check the reviews on them before you plan a cabin stay.
