Wings Over the Rockies, an air and space museum; located in Denver, Colorado, is a fun place we liked so much we have visited it twice. The museum is located in a hangar at the old Lowry Air Base, and even the airplane hanger is a piece of history as it was built back during WWII! It is a 180,000 square feet area of every AVgeeks’ dreams come true.
Other places we enjoyed in Colorado:
Cave of the Winds in Colorado Springs
We first visited the museum because it is a member of the ASTC, so we had free admission. A huge win when your kids are as young as ours were and you aren’t even sure they will care anything about it.
Location
The Museum is located at
7711 East Academy Blvd
Denver, CO 80230
(303)360-5360
It is located in a very cool part of town and has some cool neighboring businesses; a coffee shop, beer garden, and an ice cream shop.
On Display
The static display out in the front of the museum is a great way to kill some time if you arrive before opening. So, be sure you check out the B-52B Stratofortress!
The inside displays are varied.
Star Wars X-Wing fighter replica
Bell UH-1 “Huey”
NASA HL-20 Dream Chaser
F14A Tomcat “Top Gun” jet
“Little Boy Atomic Bomb replica
They also have full-motion Max Flight simulators. Tickets (according to their website, April 2024) are $12.50 per person. My kids were able to do it and loved it.
If simulators are what you are looking for they offer more at their sister location, Exploration of Flight, at Centennial Airport.
Our kids enjoyed the children’s play area when they were four and when they were 12. So definitely check it out if you have little ones with you.
The museum has a gift shop with lots of fun stuff.
The museum is very stroller and wheelchair friendly.
There is free parking.
